Putin Agrees to Release American Citizen Robert Gillman for Humanitarian Reasons

Washington: US President Donald Trump announced that American citizen Robert Gillman, a former US Marine, will return to the United States after Russia agreed to release him “for humanitarian reasons,” following his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump confirmed in a post on Truth Social that “Gillman’s release did not involve any exchange, and Russia did not ask for anything in return.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Trump stated that “Gillman will arrive tonight at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, where he will be received by representatives of the US administration.” The release of Gillman marks a significant diplomatic engagement between the United States and Russia, highlighting a moment of cooperation amidst ongoing global tensions.

Robert Gillman was arrested in 2022 in the Russian city of Voronezh while traveling by train. His detention had been a point of contention, with calls for his release coming from various quarters of the US administration and human rights organizations. The announcement of his release has been met with relief and anticipation, as he is expected to reunite with his family and loved ones upon his return to the US.
