Putin and Sisi Urge Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon

CAIRO: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi have called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. The two leaders held discussions on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, focusing on regional and international issues, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Egyptian presidency stated that the meeting included an expanded discussion session where President Putin welcomed Sisi's participation in the summit. Sisi's presence marked Egypt's first participation as a member of the BRICS group. Putin emphasized that Egypt's inclusion in the group reinforces its role in enhancing multilateral cooperation among developing countries. President Sisi expressed his appreciation for Russia's efforts during its presidency of the BRICS group and underscored Egypt's commitment to engaging in the group's activities. He highlighted the importance of strengthening coope ration with Russia both at the multilateral level and in bilateral relations. The Egyptian presidency's official spokesman reported that the discussions between Putin and Sisi covered a range of urgent international issues. They agreed on the critical importance of de-escalating tensions in the Middle East due to the adverse regional and international repercussions of ongoing conflicts. The statement noted that both presidents called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon and emphasized the need to reduce escalation and avoid actions that could lead to further crises in the region. President Sisi also highlighted the importance of facilitating humanitarian aid to Gaza and supporting Lebanon's sovereignty, security, and stability. The talks also addressed the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, with Sisi reiterating Egypt's stance advocating for diplomatic solutions and political settlements to preserve international peace and security while safeguarding the capabilities of peoples.
