Baghdad: On the occasion of the Islamic Day for Combating Violence Against Women, the Reconstruction and Development Coalition has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Iraqi women. In their statement, the coalition emphasized that safeguarding women is a religious, constitutional, and national duty rather than a political choice or a slogan for special occasions.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the coalition highlighted that the foundation of family is built on affection and mercy, as per the teachings of their noble religion. The Iraqi Constitution further emphasizes the preservation of dignity and equality before the law, aligning with Iraq’s international obligations. Violence against women and girls is categorized as a violation of the law, not a private family matter, and the state is responsible for addressing it.

The coalition commended the judiciary’s steps, particularly the establishment of specialized courts for domestic violence cases and the expedited resolution of such cases. Additionally, the selection of Baghdad as the permanent headquarters for the “Arab Women Judges Network” was praised, reflecting Iraq’s standing and the pioneering role of Iraqi women judges in justice.

The coalition outlined a four-point strategy to consolidate gains and elevate the status of women. The first path involves legislation supporting the enactment of a law against domestic violence that protects victims and deters perpetrators. The second path focuses on economic empowerment by expanding funding for small projects to aid women breadwinners, widows, and divorcees, promoting economic independence as a defense against violence.

The third path involves strengthening the judiciary and security by providing resources and trained personnel for specialized courts, developing community policing units, and expanding shelters and guidance centers. Lastly, the coalition emphasized the importance of societal awareness through the role of educational and media institutions and moderate religious discourse, correcting misconceptions and reinforcing the role of men as protectors of their families.

The coalition stressed that nation-building is unattainable without the participation of half of society in security and decision-making. Iraqi women, with their endurance and contributions, are vital partners in the reconstruction and development project. Their protection is a shared responsibility among the three branches of government and civil society organizations.
