Saint Sarkis Day Ceremony Commemorated at Tehran’s Largest Church

Tehran: The ceremony marking Saint Sarkis Day took place on January 31, 2026, at Saint Sarkis Cathedral, an Armenian church situated in the Iranian capital. Saint Sarkis Cathedral, the largest church in Tehran, is located on Karimkhan Zand Street.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency, Saint Sarkis is a significant Armenian figure from the fourth century AD. Originally one of the commanders of the Roman army, he fled Rome due to his Christian faith and sought refuge in Armenia. However, he was expelled from Armenia following the Roman emperor’s orders.

Eventually, Saint Sarkis arrived in Sassanid Iran and joined the Sassanian army, achieving success in the war against the Kushans. Despite his military accomplishments, he was accused of preaching Christianity and was ultimately killed alongside his son.
