Saudi Arabia: Saudi Airlines has resumed flights transporting Iranian pilgrims for the first time since 2015, in a further sign of improving relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, An official at the General Authority of Civil Aviation said, "Flynas (the low-cost airline affiliated with Saudi Arabian Airlines) resumed flights transporting Iranian pilgrims from Imam Khomeini Airport in Tehran on Saturday." He explained that it "will operate similar flights to and from Mashhad Airport in the city of Mashhad" in northeastern Iran.
This year's Hajj season begins in the first week of June, and pilgrims from all over the world have already begun arriving at the holy sites in Saudi Arabia. The official stated that the Saudi airline will operate "approximately 225 flights by next July to transport more than 35,000 Iranian pilgrims," stressing that these flights are "for Hajj only and are not commercial."
Iran and Saudi Arabia resumed relations in March 2023 under a surprise Chinese-brokered agreement that ended a diplomatic rift that began in January 2016.
