Baghdad: The head of the Security Media Cell, Lieutenant General Saad Maan, announced on Monday the dismantling of one of the largest cyber fraud and extortion networks in Iraq. Maan stated in a press release that “in a swift operation characterized by precision and high professionalism, and based on accurate intelligence and diligent field and digital surveillance, the Federal Intelligence and Investigations Agency was able to thwart a dangerous criminal plot and dismantle one of the most sophisticated networks involved in financial fraud and the theft of electronic wallets.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Intelligence Agency was able to apprehend the accused, Murtadha Abbas Mohsen Al-Namash, identified as the mastermind, along with other members of his criminal network. This was achieved by tracking their digital footprint and executing a well-coordinated operation, preventing them from carrying out further plans.

Maan confirmed that the network used tactics such as deception and extortion by impersonating fictitious companies. This strategy was aimed at selling US dollars to citizens and travelers via social media, ultimately compromising their financial assets. The dismantling of the network’s digital empire was detailed as follows:

– OKX platform: Neutralizing a network with 5,000 subscribers.

– Binance platform: Canceling the channel with 1,800 subscribers.

– Bybit platform: Terminating the activity of the channel with 1,400 subscribers.

– MEXC platform: Closing the channel with 10 subscribers.

He noted that legal measures have been taken against the perpetrators. The accused has been referred to judicial authorities and detained in accordance with the provisions of Article 456 of the Penal Code to receive punishment.
