Washington: The US Senate rejected a bill on Saturday that would have ended the longest government shutdown in US history.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the bill was rejected by a vote of 53 to 43. The bill needed at least 60 votes to pass in the Senate.

The report added that most Democrats voted against the bill, arguing that it would grant US President Donald Trump broad powers to withhold pay from some employees.
