The Council said in a statement marking the International Day of Democracy, received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that ‘protecting freedoms and constitutional rights and ensuring their exercise represent the essence of a democratic state and a pillar of the rule of law, while the judiciary serves as a safeguard for preserving and protecting these rights.’

According to Iraqi News Agency, the Council stressed that ‘freedom of opinion and expression, and respect for diversity and pluralism, are rights guaranteed by the Iraqi Constitution, provided that they are exercised in a manner that safeguards the rights and dignity of others, without infringing upon or offending any components, religions, sects or beliefs, and in a way that reinforces freedom, justice and the rule of law and promotes social peace.’
