Spain’s Transport Minister Resigns Following Toledo Train Disaster

Toledo:Spain’s Transport Minister, Oscar Puente, has announced his resignation in the aftermath of a tragic high-speed train disaster in Toledo that resulted in the deaths of 69 people and injuries to approximately 200 others.

According to Iraqi News Agency, Puente stated his resignation was necessary due to the occurrence of two accidents in less than a year, emphasizing it as “a matter of dignity.” He expressed this sentiment to the Permanent Deputation of Congress, describing his decision as one of “political dignity.”

In addition to stepping down from his ministerial role, Puente has also withdrawn his candidacy for the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party in Valladolid, ahead of the upcoming snap general elections scheduled for November 29. The disaster, noted as one of the deadliest rail crashes in Europe this century, has significantly impacted the campaign efforts of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who is currently trailing in opinion polls.
