Damascus: Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and his French counterpart Jean-No«l Barrot signed a declaration of intent in Damascus to recover funds belonging to Rifaat al-Assad that were confiscated in France. This took place during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Syria.

onfiscated after Rifaat al-Assad was convicted of money laundering, embezzlement, and seizing properties worth millions of euros.

A French court sentenced Rifaat al-Assad to four years in prison in 2020, a sentence that became final in 2022. He died in January 2026 at the age of 88.
