Baghdad: Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa emphasized the importance of strengthening and developing bilateral relations between Syria and Iraq, noting a tangible improvement in these relations recently. He stressed the need to build them on solid foundations that serve the interests of the two brotherly peoples.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, al-Sharaa explained in a televised interview that current policy is based on building and developing relations with neighboring countries through official and legitimate channels. He considered direct communication with governments and empowering their role to be the most successful way to ensure the safety and stability of relations in the long term.

Al-Sharaa pointed to the depth of the social and historical ties that bind Iraq and Syria, especially the tribal and clan connections and close family ties, noting that the closeness and affection between the two peoples has always been stronger than the political differences that may arise at certain times and negatively affect official relations.

The Syrian president explained that there are mutual interests and significant sources of integration between the two countries; The Iraqi market needs many Syrian resources and products, and similarly, Syria needs vital Iraqi resources. Al-Sharaa stressed the necessity of structuring and framing these shared interests within sound and sustainable foundations that contribute to achieving development and prosperity for both countries.
