The FM Receives The SG-UN, Confirmes the importance of the role of the United Nations in supporting Iraq

Baghdad / NINA / – Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein stressed, during his meeting with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, in the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the importance of the visit of the Secretary-General and the role of the United Nations and the Iraq Assistance Mission (UNAMI) in supporting Iraq, holding the recent elections and building democracy.

The minister reviewed, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the priorities of the Iraqi government’s program in providing services and enacting important laws such as the federal budget law, the oil and gas law, achieving economic growth and stability, and the importance of starting economic projects related to natural gas extraction, electric power generation and economic development.

He pointed out the existence of a real partnership between the various Iraqi political parties and the agreement on a governmental program supported by parliament and political parties to achieve the best services and build a strong economy within specific timetables.

Hussein gave an explanation of the role of Iraq in the region and the efforts of joint coordination with the countries of the region, and the importance of achieving security stability in the region for Iraq, as the outcomes of the Baghdad 1 and Baghdad 2 conferences were important by bringing together the parties and achieving reconciliation and stability, referring to Iraq’s efforts in negotiating with neighboring countries on basis of common interests.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the United Nations welcomed the role that Iraq is currently playing in the region, expressing his happiness at the security and political stability in Iraq and his continuous support within this framework to achieve the best services for the Iraqi people, as the security, stability and well-being of Iraq reflects positively on regional security, praising Iraq’s efforts to achieve peace and stability among the countries of the region.

The Secretary-General affirmed the full readiness of the United Nations to provide support and advice to Iraq in various fields.

Guterres said: “My current visit to Iraq differs from previous visits, and I am happy with the positive development of the current situation,” praising the Iraqi government’s efforts to fight corruption and eradicate this dangerous scourge./ End
