Basra: The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq, Head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Mohammed Al-Hassan, arrived in Basra on an official visit to observe the progress of the electoral process. He was received by Aqeel Al-Furaiji, Head of the Security Committee in the Basra Provincial Council, who accompanied him on a field tour of several polling centers across the governorate.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, a statement issued by Al-Furaiji’s office said that Al-Hassan praised the role of the media in Basra, describing it as a key pillar in supporting and conveying the democratic electoral process in southern Iraq. Al-Hassan emphasized that Basra is not only the capital of Iraq but also a capital of the region, noting that UN teams are deployed throughout the country, but he was keen to personally visit Basra to monitor the progress of elections there.

He also commended the Basra local government for its economic and industrial achievements and the rapid pace of reconstruction in the province. Al-Hassan stressed that the electoral process is proceeding smoothly and efficiently, and expressed his full satisfaction with the performance of all parties contributing to its success.
