Konya: A 3-storey building collapsed at dawn today in Konya province, central Turkey, prompting rescue teams to launch search and rescue operations for those trapped under the rubble.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the collapse occurred in the Selcuklu area. Eyewitnesses quickly notified authorities, leading to the swift deployment of teams from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), along with police and emergency services.

Search and rescue efforts commenced immediately amid reports of potential victims beneath the debris. Authorities have urged passersby to maintain calm to aid in operational efficiency.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that the response teams included 99 individuals and 27 vehicles from the Disaster and Emergency Management Directorates, alongside 120 firefighters, police units, and healthcare teams. Additional AFAD teams were dispatched from nearby provinces, including Ankara, Eskisehir, Antalya, and Mersin.

AFAD has confirmed the deployment of 200 personnel composed of rescue teams, police, firefighters, and healthcare units, with extra support from neighboring provinces. "We are closely monitoring developments," AFAD stated.

Konya Mayor Ugur Ibrahim Altay reported that the building was licensed but not part of urban renewal projects. He noted via the X platform that the building housed 14 apartments and that rescue operations are being expedited.

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz visited the scene, emphasizing that saving lives is the priority. "Our primary goal is to save lives," he stated.
