Baghdad: The Ministry of Electricity announced on Monday that it has reached a significant agreement with French company Total Energies to secure the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and ensure the stability of energy provision in Iraq.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry confirmed that the principles of this agreement, signed in Paris under the supervision of Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi, involve discussions and negotiations for the supply and regasification of LNG through Iraq’s national gas pipeline network. This move is expected to significantly contribute to the operation of power generation plants across the country.

A statement from the Ministry revealed that Minister of Electricity Ali Saadi Wahib signed the agreement’s principles with Total Energies Gas and Energy Activities, focusing on the supply of LNG to the General Company for Electricity Production/Southern Region. This initiative is part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to secure and diversify the fuel sources necessary for the efficient functioning of power generation facilities.

The agreement outlines plans to deploy a floating platform at Iraqi ports in Basra Governorate to facilitate the regasification of LNG through the national gas pipeline network. This development is anticipated to bolster electricity production capabilities by ensuring a stable and diversified supply of fuel.

The Ministry concluded its statement by emphasizing that this agreement aligns with its directives to enhance fuel supplies, diversify sources, and support the stable operation of power generation plants to increase and stabilize electricity supply hours across Iraq.
