Baghdad: A woman died and a child was injured when a truck overturned on them in the Al-Mahmoudiya highway. The Civil Defense Directorate announced on Saturday the death of a woman and the injury of a child after a truck overturned on them on the Mahmoudiya highway south of Baghdad.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the directorate stated that their teams are working to recover the body of the woman who died in a traffic accident. A semi-trailer truck overturned and fell directly on her and a child who was with her as they attempted to cross the road.

The statement explained that the accident occurred when the semi-trailer truck suddenly swerved to avoid a woman and child crossing the highway at a critical moment. This led to the driver losing complete control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn and spill its cargo.

The directorate indicated that the woman died from her severe injuries sustained when the truck fell. Rescue teams are currently working intensively to lift the heavy wreckage and recover her body. The child sustained minor injuries and was immediately transported to the hospital for treatment.

The Civil Defense Directorate confirmed that their units rushed to the scene of the accident immediately upon receiving the report. They began securing the area and directing traffic in cooperation with the relevant authorities, in addition to commencing the complex technical operations to remove the overturned truck and completely clear the site.
