Washington: US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire. Media outlets quoted the US president as saying, “I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Pakistan’s envoy to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, had asked US President Donald Trump to intervene to prevent a nuclear war with India, while New Delhi announced the closure of its airspace to Pakistani aircraft.

Sheikh said in an exclusive interview with Newsweek, “If we have a president who seeks peace in the world as a stated goal during this administration, or to establish a legacy as a peacemaker, as someone who has ended wars and defied them and played a role in de-escalating conflicts and resolving disputes, I don’t think there is a bigger or more explosive flashpoint, particularly in the nuclear realm, than Kashmir.”

He added, “We’re not talking about one or two countries in that region that have nuclear capabilities, so that’s how dangerous it is.”
