Davos: U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday, from the Swiss city of Davos, the formation of what he called the ‘Board of Peace,’ reaffirming his determination to end more wars in the Middle East.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Trump spoke during the ceremony marking the Board’s establishment and described the day as ‘very exciting.’ He claimed that peace had been achieved in the Middle East, a feat many believed was unattainable. Trump stated that eight wars had already been brought to an end and hinted at the resolution of another conflict, referencing the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Trump emphasized that the world has become ‘safer, more prosperous, and more peaceful’ over the past year. The newly-formed Board of Peace is chaired by Trump and includes leaders and representatives from 19 countries such as Argentina, Bahrain, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Hungary, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Pakistan, Paraguay, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, and Mongolia.
During his address, Trump highlighted the importance of the Board of Peace meeting, which he said would operate in coordination with the United Nations. He expressed optimism about the potential collaboration, suggesting that combining the Board of Peace with the UN could lead to unique global advancements.
Trump issued a stern warning to Hamas, urging them to disarm, otherwise facing severe consequences. He mentioned that the United Nations had passed a resolution last October supporting the council’s role in overseeing a transitional Palestinian government and an international peacekeeping force.
Trump proposed broadening the council’s original mandate, allowing it to take on roles traditionally managed by the United Nations in resolving global conflicts. He expressed confidence that the council would accomplish tasks that are typically expected of the United Nations.
