Turnberry: US President Donald Trump declared during a press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that “Iran has been dealt a devastating blow, and we will not allow it to enrich uranium and possess nuclear weapons.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, this statement was made as Trump commenced discussions in Turnberry, Scotland, with von der Leyen. The talks come at a crucial time as the deadline for reaching a trade agreement to avoid 30% tariffs on European imports draws near.

During the press conference, Trump focused on the issue of Iran, asserting, “Iran has been dealt a devastating blow, for good reason, but they’re still talking about enrichment.” He further emphasized, “Who would do that? How stupid of you to say that. So, we will not allow that to happen. We will not allow them to enrich uranium and possess nuclear weapons.”

The contentious issue of uranium enrichment remains a significant point of disagreement, with Iran maintaining its right to continue enrichment for civilian purposes-an assertion the United States firmly opposes.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry had previously communicated to the European Union and the “troika” during negotiations in Istanbul about its right to continue uranium enrichment on Iranian soil. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reiterated before the nuclear negotiations with the European Troika that Tehran’s stance remains unchanged, and enrichment operations are ongoing.
