Washington: US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday the imposition of “urgent retaliatory measures” against Colombia following its decision to prevent US military aircraft, carrying deported migrants, from landing in the country.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Trump took to the “Truth Social” platform to express his dissatisfaction with Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s actions. He described the blocked flights as a risk to US national security and public safety, stating that Petro’s refusal to allow the planes to land necessitated a firm response from his administration.

In his statement, Trump detailed several measures, including an emergency 25 percent tariff on all goods entering the United States from Colombia, which is set to increase to 50 percent within a week. Additionally, he announced a ban on travel and the revocation of visas for Colombian government officials, as well as visa sanctions on members, family, and supporters of the Colombian government.

Further actions include enhanced customs inspections and border protection for Colombian citizens and goods, alongside financial sanctions aligned with international economic law. Trump emphasized that these actions mark the beginning of further responses, asserting that the US will not allow Colombia to shirk its responsibilities regarding the return of criminals.

Meanwhile, President Gustavo Petro defended his decision on social media, emphasizing the humane treatment of migrants. On the “X” platform, Petro declared that migrants are not criminals and deserve dignified treatment. He indicated that Colombia would only accept deported migrants via civilian flights, rejecting the use of military aircraft for such purposes. Petro reiterated his commitment to receiving migrants appropriately, ensuring they are treated with respect and dignity.
