Turkey Calls for Unified Syrian Government and National Army

New york: Turkey stresses the need for a central government and a single national army in Syria to achieve stability. Turkish Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ahmet Yildiz, emphasized the necessity of unity and territorial integrity in Syria during his address to the UN Security Council under the theme “The Situation in the Middle East.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Yildiz reiterated Turkey’s support for initiatives that promote peace, security, and stability in Syria. He welcomed the recently presented roadmap for As-Suwayda Governorate by Syria, Jordan, and the United States, affirming Ankara’s commitment to backing efforts that ensure the well-being of all segments of Syrian society.

Yildiz criticized Israel’s policy towards Syria, highlighting the importance of Israel reconsidering its stance to maintain a fragmented and weakened Syria. He asserted that stability in Syria is beneficial for regional security, urging Israel to recognize this fact.

Focusing on Syria’s internal challenges, Yildiz acknowledged the Syrian government’s advancements in combating ISIS over the past nine months. He also addressed the incomplete implementation of the agreement between the Syrian government and the Kurdish SDF, pointing out the SDF’s lack of commitment to a unified Syrian future.

Yildiz urged increased pressure on the SDF to align with a vision of a unified Syria, stressing that maintaining Syria’s trajectory towards unity is a collective responsibility. He cautioned against any ideas or initiatives that might lead to fragmentation, emphasizing their potential risks.
