Baghdad: Turkey has expressed approval following the United Nations Security Council’s decision to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Khattab. This development was formalized in UN Security Council Resolution 2799 (2025), a move that aims to alleviate the longstanding international restrictions imposed on Syria.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Turkish Foreign Ministry released a statement where Spokesperson Oncu Ke§eli labeled the resolution as a “positive step.” Turkey views this action as a means to rectify the adverse impacts of previous sanctions on both the Syrian populace and its government. Ke§eli emphasized Turkey’s ongoing support for initiatives that aim to fully lift sanctions on Syria, thereby accelerating its reintegration into the global community and contributing to regional stability and development.

This resolution is part of a broader international effort to reintegrate Syria into the global fold after years of diplomatic isolation and economic sanctions that began with the Syrian conflict in 2011. The Syrian Foreign Ministry also responded positively to the UN Security Council’s decision, interpreting it as an endorsement of Syria’s sovereignty and stability.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry’s statement highlighted the removal of sanctions as a sign of growing international confidence in President al-Sharaa’s leadership. The Ministry also noted that this action signals a unified international stance supporting Syria’s political independence and regional security efforts.

The UN resolution, orchestrated by the United States, garnered significant backing with 14 votes in favor and one abstention among the 15-member Security Council. The resolution, invoking Chapter VII of the UN Charter, effectively removes the restrictive measures placed on the Syrian leaders prior to their tenure in the current administration.

The Security Council reiterated its commitment to upholding Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while expressing ongoing support for the Syrian population.
