Istanbul: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has reiterated that Turkey’s stance on Syria is rooted in the principle that fundamental decisions should be made by the Syrians themselves. In a recent interview with “24 TV,” Fidan highlighted the fragile situation in Syria and emphasized Turkey’s constructive foreign policy aimed at improving conditions in the region.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Fidan stated that Turkey is engaged in consultations with the new Syrian administration, underscoring the importance of Syria’s territorial integrity. He noted the significance of the new Syrian government’s steps to advance its interests internationally, as well as the sanctions imposed by the EU and the US during the former regime’s period. Fidan emphasized the need for dialogue to resolve regional divergences.

Fidan also addressed the possibility of persuading the Israeli government to change its approach in Gaza, expressing belief in the potential of joint actions. He noted that while there’s an international consensus against the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, it has yet to lead to actionable outcomes.

On Turkish-American relations, Fidan highlighted the agreement between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and American President Donald Trump to resolve bilateral issues. He noted the importance of focusing on technology and trade, rather than traditional security and political perspectives. Fidan also remarked on the non-essential nature of the US military presence in Syria.

Regarding Turkey’s EU membership bid, Fidan pointed out that opposition from France and Germany, due to Turkey being a Muslim country, has stalled accession negotiations. He suggested that Turkey’s EU membership might have prevented Brexit and noted the rise of the far-right in Europe regardless of Turkey’s status.

Fidan also commented on the Indian-Pakistani tensions, warning of the risks of conflict between two nuclear powers. He mentioned that Pakistan was initially attacked and has called for an international investigation, while Turkey supports a neutral committee to probe the incident. Fidan highlighted Pakistan’s balanced response to avoid escalating tensions.
