Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to Attend OIC and Arab League Summit in Doha

Doha: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will travel to Doha on Sunday to attend the ministerial preparatory meeting for the extraordinary joint summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League, scheduled for Monday.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting will discuss a draft resolution to be presented at the summit, which is convened at Qatar’s invitation and supported by Turkey in its capacity as Chair of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers. This follows the Israeli attack on Doha and the escalating assaults in Gaza and the West Bank.

The resolution is expected to call for an immediate halt to Israeli attacks on Gaza and neighboring countries, building on the outcomes of previous emergency meetings in Istanbul and Jeddah. The summit, which is the third of its kind since October 2023, will also address the expansion of Israeli aggression to several countries in the region.

Fidan is set to deliver a speech reaffirming Ankara’s solidarity with Qatar, warning that Prime Minister Netanyahu’s policies undermine peace prospects and threaten regional stability. He will also stress the need for a collective response to end the aggression, while urging that the growing international recognition of Palestine be leveraged to advance its bid for full UN membership.

The OIC, founded in 1969 and comprising 57 member states, is the world’s second-largest intergovernmental organization after the United Nations. Turkey currently chairs its Council of Foreign Ministers.
