Turkey’s Ruling Party Welcomes PKK’s Decision to Disarm and Dissolve

Ankara: The spokesperson for Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), Ömer Çelik, confirmed that the decision of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) to dissolve itself and lay down its weapons, following the call of its leader, Abdullah Öcalan, is "an important step towards achieving the goal of a terrorism-free Turkey." According to National Iraqi News Agency, Çelik stated in a post on the X platform that the dissolution of the PKK and the complete laying down of its weapons, leading to the closure of all its branches and illegal structures, will be "a decisive turning point." He asserted that Turkish government institutions will closely monitor the process and present its stages to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. At the end of last February, Öcalan called for the dissolution of all PKK-affiliated groups and an end to its activities, which have persisted for over 40 years. Çelik emphasized President Erdogan's resolve for a "terror-free Turkey" and acknowledged the support from Nationalis t Movement Party leader Devlet Bahçeli, whose directives contribute to strengthening the "home front." Çelik highlighted that the decision to disband and disarm must be implemented in all dimensions, both internally and externally, to deter imperialist tactics using terrorist organizations for proxy wars. He noted that achieving a terror-free Turkey would activate political channels amidst global political chaos, reinforcing Turkey as a bulwark and its democracy as a problem-solving foundation. He concluded that these developments would bolster democracy, political life, and national unity, ensuring vigorous political dialogue in legitimate arenas, especially Parliament.
