Turkish Foreign Minister Meets Guterres in Geneva

Geneva: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the expanded informal meeting on Cyprus.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the expanded informal meeting on Cyprus began on Monday with a dinner hosted by the UN Secretary-General for the participants. Attendees included the Turkish Foreign Minister, President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), Ersin Tatar, leader of the Greek Cypriot administration, Nikos Christodoulides, Greek Foreign Minister Georgios Kasparov, and Stephen Doughty, Minister of State for Europe and North America at the British Foreign Office, along with their accompanying delegations.

Cyprus has remained divided since 1974, with the north occupied by Turkish Cypriots and the south by Greek Cypriots. In 2004, a UN-sponsored plan to unify the island was rejected by the Greek Cypriots. Since the collapse of UN-sponsored reunification talks in Switzerland in July 2017, official UN-mediated negotiations have stalled, leaving the conflict unresolved.
