Helsinki: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is scheduled to pay an official visit to Finland today, Tuesday, during which he will hold talks with his Finnish counterpart, Elina Valtonen, and a number of senior Finnish officials.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, during the visit, Fidan is also scheduled to meet with Finnish Parliament Speaker Jussi Halla-aho and deliver a speech at a parliamentary event on “Turkish-Finnish Cooperation.” The sources stated that Fidan’s talks will focus on deepening bilateral relations in the areas of trade, investment, and the defense industry, as well as cooperation in digital technology, cybersecurity, and renewable energy.
The Turkish Minister will also emphasize the importance of developing joint partnerships in the Arctic region, which will open new horizons for cooperation between Ankara and Helsinki. Fidan will also discuss relations between Turkey and the European Union, expressing Ankara’s appreciation for Finland’s support of Turkey’s EU accession process and emphasizing the importance of updating the Customs Union agreement and accelerating the visa liberalization dialogue.
The Turkish minister will also discuss regional and international developments, stressing the importance of Turkish-Finnish cooperation in multilateral organizations, particularly within the Group of Friends of Mediation at the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). During the meetings, Fidan will emphasize that Turkey, as a key NATO member, is ready to support Finland, a recent member of the Alliance, and continues to play an active role in strengthening European security.
The Turkish minister will also reiterate his country’s position calling for a peaceful and just end to the war between Russia and Ukraine, adherence to the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, and ensuring the continued flow of humanitarian aid and the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. It is worth noting that diplomatic relations between Turkey and Finland date back to 1924, while the volume of trade between the two countries reached approximately $1.8 billion in 2024.
