Turkish Interior Minister Visits Damascus to Discuss Key Security and Humanitarian Issues

Damascus: Turkish Interior Minister Mustafa €š¬¡ift§i arrived in the Syrian capital, Damascus, for an official visit to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation on a number of security and humanitarian issues.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, €š¬¡ift§i is scheduled to meet with Syrian Interior Minister Anas al-Khattab and Minister of Disaster and Emergency Management Raed al-Saleh. The two sides will discuss prospects for cooperation in disaster and emergency management, in addition to signing a memorandum of understanding between the two countries in this field.

The talks will also cover the exchange of information and expertise in combating smuggling, organized crime, and drug trafficking, as well as strengthening border security. Discussions will also include mechanisms to support the voluntary return of Syrians residing in Turkey.

The visit will also address the establishment of an infrastructure for training Syrian police officers inside Syria, which will contribute to developing security cooperation between the two countries. The Turkish minister is also expected to meet with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa during his visit.

The visit is part of the two countries' efforts to expand bilateral cooperation on security, border issues, and voluntary return, as well as to strengthen partnership in disaster and emergency management and public services.
