Turkish Judiciary Orders Detention of Istanbul Mayor on Corruption Charges

Istanbul: An Istanbul court issued an official detention order on Sunday for Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu on corruption-related charges, pending investigation. The court also ordered the detention of four of the mayor’s aides pending investigation on corruption-related charges.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Turkish judiciary indicated that the charge against Imamoglu regarding cooperation with a “terrorist organization,” referring to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), has not yet been decided. Last Wednesday, the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered the detention of Imamoglu and 99 other suspects on charges of “corruption, bribery, and terrorism.”

The prosecutor’s office also charged the mayor and others with “leading a criminal organization,” “membership of a criminal organization,” “extortion,” “bribery,” “illegally obtaining personal data,” and “fraud.” Imamoglu, along with seven others, including Mahir Polat, the assistant secretary-general of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, and Resul Emre Sahan, the mayor of Istanbul’s Sisli district, are accused of “aiding the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).” Imamoglu and most of those detained are members of the opposition Republican People’s Party.
