Ankara: The Turkish Parliament approved the extension of the deployment of military forces abroad for an additional three years, aiming to eliminate potential attacks against the country by terrorist organizations in Iraq and Syria. The extension also includes the mandate of the Turkish forces operating in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for two years.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, this decision was made during a session of the General Assembly of the Turkish Parliament held last night, focusing on the presidential memorandum that proposed extending the deployment of Turkish military forces to conduct military operations targeting terrorists in Iraq and Syria. The parliament sanctioned the extension for three years, commencing on October 30.

The presidential memorandum, endorsed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, highlighted the persistent terrorist threats in regions neighboring Turkey’s southern land borders and the absence of enduring stability, which continue to pose risks to national security. It emphasized Turkey’s dedication to safeguarding Iraq’s territorial integrity, national unity, and stability.

The memorandum also underscored the alignment with the aspirations and needs of the current Syrian administration. It stressed the necessity to enhance the country’s capabilities in combating terrorism and supporting international and national efforts. The memorandum accentuated the importance of taking essential measures against all risks and threats that could endanger Turkey’s national security while promoting efforts to establish stability in Syria.

In parallel, the Turkish Parliament approved a presidential memorandum extending the mandate of Turkish forces within the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for an additional two years. This extension, also signed by President Erdogan, stated that Turkey’s contribution to UNIFIL aligns with UN Security Council Resolution 1701 of August 11, 2006, and will commence on October 31.
