Washington: The US capital will host the Turkish-US Working Group on Syria tomorrow, Tuesday. Turkish Foreign Ministry sources stated in a press release on Monday that the meeting will be co-chaired by Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yilmaz and his US counterpart, Christopher Landau, as a meeting between the two countries’ institutions.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting is expected to address the priorities of both Turkey and the United States in their policies toward Syria, in addition to exploring opportunities for cooperation to achieve security and stability in the Arab country. The fight against ISIS and other terrorist organizations will be a prominent issue on the meeting’s agenda.

Recent regional efforts led by Turkey and the support it has provided to the Damascus administration in the fight against ISIS will also be discussed. The meeting is also expected to evaluate opportunities for cooperation regarding camps in northeastern Syria, and Washington will provide information on the ongoing process of reorganizing its military presence in Syria.

This meeting is of great importance given that it comes after a direct meeting between the Syrian and US presidents in Saudi Arabia and Donald Trump’s announcement of his intention to lift sanctions imposed on Damascus. In this context, the mechanism for lifting US sanctions on Syria is expected to be discussed, along with the timetable and steps to be taken in this regard.

During the meeting, Yilmaz is expected to emphasize the importance of multidimensional coordination between Turkey and the United States in the political, economic, and security fields to ensure security and stability in Syria by preserving its territorial integrity.
