Baghdad The Municipal Council in Sanandaj, the capital of the Iranian Kurdistan Province (West), approved the twinning agreement with the city of Sulaymaniyah.

“With the aim of developing cultural, social and economic relations and developing the tourism industry, taking into account the similarities and commonalities between the cities of Sanandaj and Sulaymaniyah, the Municipal Council approved the proposal for the twinning of these two cities,” said Sanandaj Mayor Hashmatullah Saidi, according to Iranian media.

Saidi explained that twinning is one of the cultural measures in order to strengthen relations between the two cities, noting that twinning cities means the link between two cities that have similarities and commonalities in terms of science, culture and history.

He continued: Sulaymaniyah is one of the cities of the Kurdistan Region and possesses cultural and social symbols and cultural similarities with Sanandaj, noting that in addition to the cultural and social similarities, the two cities were able to join the UNESCO network of creative cities in 2019.

He added: With the aim of expanding cultural, social and economic relations, developing the tourism industry, and also using the potential of both parties to implement investment projects, Sanandaj proposed the Creative City of Music, twinning with Sulaymaniyah, which is a creative city with literature.

The Iranian official said: Preparations for talks with Sulaymaniyah city officials will begin, and we hope that we will be able to develop cultural, social, economic and sports activities between the two cities through the twinning agreement.
