Istanbul: Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustam Umarov announced that Ukraine is advocating for a leaders' summit with Russia as the next step following the recent tripartite negotiations held in Istanbul between Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey. Umarov stated that organizing a meeting at the leaders' level is the current focus for Ukraine.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, Umarov emphasized Ukraine's desire for peace, highlighting the country's commitment to ending the conflict despite possessing the strength and ability to continue fighting. He stated, "This is the next step for Ukraine, and I believe our next step will be to organize a meeting at the leaders' level, and this is what we are currently working on."
In addition, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Serhiy Kyslytsya described the day's negotiations as productive, noting that they were the culmination of weeks of collaboration with Turkey, the United States, and Ukraine's European partners. Kyslytsya underscored the significance of maintaining pressure on Russia, suggesting that a summit between leaders could resolve numerous issues.
Kyslytsya remarked on the necessity of Russian President Vladimir Putin's involvement in resolving complex issues, expressing anticipation for a summit. He stated, "Given the complexity of the issues and the nature of the Russian Federation, we believe that many issues can only be resolved by Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, and that is why we are eagerly awaiting a summit as soon as possible."
Vadim Skibitsky, Deputy Head of the General Intelligence Service of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, highlighted a significant topic of discussion during the negotiations: the exchange of prisoners. Skibitsky revealed that Moscow has agreed to exchange 1,000 prisoners from each side, with preparations for the exchange lists set to begin immediately.
Skibitsky affirmed Ukraine's dedication to the return of all captured citizens, stating, "We are waiting for them and will welcome them with joy. We will continue to work with the Russian side."
