Port-au-Prince: The UN Special Representative for Haiti, Maria Isabel Salvador, issued a stark warning to the UN Security Council on Monday, indicating that the country is nearing a “point of no return” due to a recent surge in gang violence. This escalation threatens to plunge Haiti into a state of “total chaos.”

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Salvador emphasized the severe impact of the spreading gang violence, noting that it is reaching new areas and heightening the fragility of the situation for Haitians. The populace is increasingly doubtful of the state’s ability to address their needs amidst this turmoil.

Salvador stressed the importance of international intervention, stating, “Without decisive, concrete, and timely international assistance, the security situation in Haiti may not change.” She highlighted the coordinated attacks by gangs aiming to consolidate their control over the capital, Port-au-Prince, and other regions.

The UN Special Representative underscored the potential for “total chaos” in Haiti, urging the Security Council to take immediate action to address the country’s urgent needs. She remarked, “Your swift response could contribute to resolving this significant deterioration.”

Salvador also expressed concern over the dire humanitarian situation, exacerbated by a severe lack of funding. She noted that the UN has been compelled to reduce its presence in Haiti’s gang-dominated capital by 85%, primarily for security reasons.
