Geneva: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, disclosed that more than 200,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their homeland since December of last year.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Grandi announced on the “X” platform that approximately 195,200 Syrians have returned to their country by January 16, following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s government on December 8, 2024. The demand for returning continues to grow, although some refugees remain hesitant. Many of those considering return have expressed the need for financial and logistical support to facilitate their reintegration and reconstruction efforts in Syria.

The plea for assistance highlights the ongoing challenges faced by returning refugees, who are eager to rebuild their lives and homes. The situation underscores the complex dynamics of repatriation, where safety, stability, and resources play crucial roles in influencing the decision to return.
