Basra: The Human Rights Office in Basra has officially announced the conclusion of its operations under the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) in the southern region, marking the end of a mission that has lasted over 20 years.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Mahdi al-Tamimi, the office director, stated in a press release, “We are bidding farewell to the Human Rights Office of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) in the southern region, following the mission’s closure in Iraq, in accordance with the Security Council resolution and at the request of the Iraqi government.” This decision brings an end to the extensive work carried out by the mission in Iraq.

Al-Tamimi highlighted the significant partnerships established by the Basra office with the Human Rights Office, emphasizing their collaboration in monitoring, documentation, and training. These activities have played a crucial role in protecting and promoting human rights both in Iraq and specifically within the governorate.
