Baghdad: UNESCO and the General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage are in discussions to launch the “Pulse of Basra” initiative. The head of the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage, Ali Obeid Shalgham, recently met with Dr. Alexandros Makarigakis, Director of the UNESCO Office in Iraq, to explore collaborative efforts aimed at preserving and restoring archaeological sites during the latter half of 2026.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the meeting, attended by Dr. Saif Hamza, the representative of the Iraqi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, focused on enhancing partnerships with the private sector to support future projects. Shalgham emphasized the need for ongoing cooperation with UNESCO, while the organization expressed its commitment to support the Board’s projects. Key items on the agenda included preparing a plan to rescue and rehabilitate the Taq-i Kisra and Aqar Quf Ziggurat sites, given their historical and cultural significance.

The discussion also included plans to launch the “Pulse of Basra” initiative, building on the successes of the “Pulse of Baghdad” and “Pulse of Mosul” initiatives. Both parties agreed to visit Basra Governorate at the beginning of next month to coordinate with the local government and identify sites for inclusion in the initiative.

Climate change impacts on archaeological sites were also addressed. Mohammed Al-Bayati, Director General of the Department of Maintenance and Preservation of Antiquities, requested a groundwater detection device and training for technical staff. He stressed the importance of adhering to international standards for current maintenance work, under UNESCO’s supervision.
