Baghdad: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Iraq commemorated World Press Freedom Day on Saturday with a distinguished discussion session for a group of journalists in Baghdad. The session, held in partnership with the Security Media Cell, was conducted under UNESCO's theme for this year: "Journalists in a Bold World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Journalism and Media." According to National Iraqi News Agency, the head of the Security Media Cell, Major General Saad Maan, reiterated the Joint Operations Command's commitment to facilitating journalistic work and supporting freedom of expression as a fundamental pillar of democracy and pluralism. For his part, UNESCO's Communication and Information Program Officer, Diaa Thabet, explained that the UN organization places freedom of expression and the safety of journalists at the heart of its priorities. He emphasized that UNESCO is working to empower the media with artificial intelligence tools, which cont ribute to developing professional performance and enhancing the well-being of journalists, rather than being a source of psychological or professional threat to them. The UN organization underscored that this year's celebration was not just an occasion, but a clear message affirming Iraq's and the international community's commitment to defending press freedom in an era where the influence of technology on the profession is growing, and the need for artificial intelligence to be a support, not an obstacle, for journalists.
