Washington: US President Donald Trump signed an executive order today to end US sanctions imposed on Syria. The White House published a statement today on its website, stating that the United States has lifted sanctions on Syria.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the statement described the move as a historic step by President Trump, aimed at supporting Syria’s journey toward stability and peace. It clarified that while the broad sanctions on Syria have been lifted, specific sanctions remain in place. These include sanctions against the former regime and its supporters, human rights violators, drug traffickers, individuals connected to chemical weapons activities, and ISIS and its affiliated organizations.

The statement further emphasized Trump’s commitment to a stable and unified Syria, highlighting the goal of fostering a nation “living at peace with itself and its neighbors.” The executive order also marks the end of the “national emergency” regarding Syria, which has been in place since 2004. Thi
s emergency had led to comprehensive sanctions affecting most state-run institutions, notably the Central Bank.
