US Ambassador Emphasizes Importance of Iraq-Syria Political Engagement Amid Regional Developments

Baghdad: The United States has outlined its vision for enhancing the relationship between Iraq and Syria, amidst ongoing regional changes. Former US Ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, emphasized the importance of political engagement between Baghdad and Damascus, stating this is the opportune moment to initiate dialogues.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Crocker highlighted Iraq's pivotal move of reopening its embassy in Damascus, thereby reestablishing its diplomatic responsibilities with the Syrian regime. He acknowledged concerns regarding Ahmed al-Sharaa's background but noted that al-Sharaa shares a common adversary with Iraq, a foundation for robust Iraqi diplomacy with Syria's new regime.

The former ambassador stressed the necessity of agreements on border control to prevent ISIS from exploiting instability in Syria. He assured that the Iraqi army's current strength and security services mitigate the recurrence of events similar to those in 2014, reinforcing the need for continued political discourse between Baghdad and Damascus.

Crocker underscored the urgency of starting talks to convey Iraq's perspectives and hopes to Syria, advocating for an ongoing dialogue for mutual benefit. He expressed hope for the rescheduling of the Syrian Foreign Minister's visit to Baghdad and encouraged Iraq to appoint a distinguished ambassador to Syria, which could guide future discussions between the two nations.
