Ankara: US Ambassador to Ankara, Thomas Barrack, announced his appointment as the US Special Envoy to Syria, in addition to his current diplomatic duties in Turkey.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the US Embassy in Ankara stated in a statement that Barrack expressed his pride in being appointed as Special Envoy to Syria, stressing that he received the support of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is tasked with implementing Trump's vision for the region.

He said: "The United States, in coordination with regional partners, primarily Turkey and the Gulf states, has contributed to restoring hope to the Syrian people for a future of peace, security, and prosperity."

Ambassador Barrack explained that on May 13, US President Donald Trump outlined his vision for the Middle East, which is based on the foundations of prosperity and stability. He noted that lifting sanctions on Syria "will contribute to enabling the new Syrian government to achieve internal stability."

Barrack continued that lifting sanctions would also preserve Washington's goal of achieving "a lasting defeat for ISIS" and provide the Syrian people with an opportunity to build a better future.

The US Ambassador concluded his statement, via the Embassy's statement, by emphasizing the commitment to the principle of partnership, saying, "As President Trump has said, we will work together and we will succeed together."

Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump announced during the "Saudi-US Investment Forum 2025" in Riyadh his intention to lift sanctions imposed on Syria. He explained that the decision came after consultations with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Syrian authorities are looking for international and regional support to help them address the repercussions of 24 years of the collapsed regime's rule.
