US and Iraq Discuss Cooperation on Syrian Prisoner Transfers

Baghdad: Justice Minister Khalid Shawani met with Joshua Harris, the Charg© d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Baghdad, to discuss the issue of foreign prisoners transferred from Syria and enhance legal and judicial cooperation between the United States and Iraq.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Ministry of Justice released a statement indicating that Shawani and Harris addressed several mutual interests, most notably the transfer of foreign prisoners from Syria to Iraq. The discussion also focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the legal and judicial fields.

The statement highlighted that the meeting delved into cooperation and coordination mechanisms concerning foreign prisoners, ensuring that these matters are handled within legal frameworks and established procedures, adhering to both Iraqi laws and international obligations.

Harris expressed gratitude to the Iraqi government and the Ministry of Justice for their role in the transfer process. He emphasized that the United States is working in coordination with its partners to support Iraq on this issue, thereby strengthening joint efforts between Baghdad and Washington.
