Washington: US President Donald Trump asserted on Wednesday that the Strait of Hormuz is now under American control, suggesting it should be renamed “Trump Strait.”

According to Iraqi News Agency, Trump made these remarks during a press statement where he downplayed the significance of reaching an agreement with Iran. “I don’t care at all whether the Iranians will sign an agreement they consider worthless,” he stated, emphasizing his disinterest in compelling Iran to negotiate.

Trump further highlighted the precarious state of the Iranian economy, suggesting that US dominance over the strategic waterway underscores Iran’s economic struggles. “We have complete control over the Strait of Hormuz while the Iranian economy is completely collapsing,” he noted, reinforcing the strategic leverage he believes the United States holds.

The suggestion to rename the Strait of Hormuz as “Trump Strait” reflects Trump’s confidence in US control over the passage, which is a critical artery for global oil shipments. “The Strait of Hormuz is now under US control, so should we change its name to Trump Strait?” Trump added, indicating his desire to cement this perceived victory with a symbolic gesture.
