US Sanctions Spark Diplomatic Tensions with Iran

Washington: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi responded to the United States' announcement of new sanctions on intermediaries and financial companies linked to Iran, accusing Washington of violating its commitments. Commenting on the latest US sanctions, Araqchi said: The solution lies in mutual adherence to the memorandum of understanding.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the US Treasury Department announced sanctions against an Iranian financial intermediary and exchange companies, accusing them of facilitating the transfer of billions of dollars to Iranian banks under sanctions. This move follows accusations that Tehran had resumed attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bisnett stated that his country would continue to use its tools to isolate what he referred to as the Iranian regime's elite from the global financial system. He emphasized that the Treasury Department would use all available tools to preserve these assets for the benefit of the Iranian people.

Araqchi affirmed Iran's adherence to its commitments, accusing Washington of violating Article 9 of the Memorandum of Understanding. This article stipulates that no new sanctions will be imposed in exchange for Iran's commitment to maintaining the status quo of its nuclear program. He stressed that the solution lies in mutual commitment between the two parties.
