Washington: The Republican-led US Senate has rejected a Democratic proposal aimed at restricting President Donald Trump’s authority to use military force against Iran. This decision comes shortly after President Trump expressed his willingness to consider further military action against the nation.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Senate voted 53-47 against the war powers resolution, which sought to mandate congressional approval for any additional military actions against Iran. The resolution, introduced by Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, was designed to reaffirm the necessity of seeking congressional authorization for military engagements involving Iran.

The vote largely followed party lines, with Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania joining Republicans in opposition to the resolution, while Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky sided with Democrats in support. Opponents of the resolution argued that the president’s strike on Iran was a limited, single operation falling within his authority as commander-in-chief, rather than the initiation of sustained military action.

President Trump has issued warnings of further strikes should Iran attempt to increase uranium enrichment to levels capable of producing nuclear weapons. Earlier, he stated his readiness to “absolutely” conduct further bombings if intelligence suggested Iran’s capability to enrich uranium to such critical levels.
