US Treasury: Iraq is Not Among the Top 20 Countries with the Largest Bond Holdings

Washington: Data from the U.S. Department of the Treasury for September showed that Iraq has dropped out of the list of the top 20 foreign holders of U.S. Treasury securities, with its holdings declining from $40.8 billion in 2023 to less than $30 billion in 2024.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates maintained their positions among the top holders, with $131.7 billion and $107.8 billion, respectively. Japan topped the list with $1.151 trillion, followed by the United Kingdom with $899 billion, and China with $730 billion.

Last year, Iraq fell to 37th place among the largest foreign holders of U.S. Treasuries, coming after Peru, with holdings of $33 billion at the time, ranking fourth among Arab countries after Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait.
