Oslo: Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized Machado for her efforts in promoting democratic rights and her advocacy for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela.
According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced its decision on Friday, highlighting Machado’s persistent efforts in the political landscape of Venezuela. Her work has been instrumental in advocating for the rights and freedoms of Venezuelan citizens amidst challenging circumstances.
In the previous year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese peace organization dedicated to promoting a nuclear-free world, drawing on the experiences of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The announcement of the Nobel Prize winners in the categories of medicine, physics, chemistry, and literature took place last week, with the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences set to be revealed next Monday. While all other Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, the Peace Prize is distinctively presented in Oslo. Each Nobel Prize carries a monetary award of 11 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to $1.1 million.
