Paris: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Fuad Hussein has issued a stark warning that ongoing conflict in the region may enable terrorist organizations, including ISIS, to regroup, posing a significant threat to both regional and international security. According to National Iraqi News Agency, the Foreign Minister made these remarks during an international conference held in Paris to mobilize aid for Lebanon. The conference, initiated by French President Emmanuel Macron, saw participation from heads of state, government officials, and ministers representing 70 countries. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also participated virtually, delivering a speech highlighting the gravity of the regional situation. In his address, Hussein commended France for hosting the conference and emphasized the importance of diplomatic solutions, including the efforts of special presidential envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian in Lebanon. He underscored the necessity of halting the conflict and facilitati ng the return of displaced individuals, stressing the importance of alleviating the suffering of the Lebanese populace. Hussein highlighted the risks associated with the ongoing hostilities, particularly the actions of the Israeli entity against Lebanese and Palestinian communities, which he described as violations of international humanitarian law. He urged the international community to take immediate steps to halt these attacks. Reaffirming Iraq's unwavering support for Lebanon, Hussein called for respect for Lebanon's sovereignty and security. He condemned the policy of collective punishment, including attacks on the health sector, and called for an immediate cessation of violations in line with international armed conflict conventions. Hussein detailed Iraq's supportive measures for Lebanon since the onset of the war, including the establishment of an air bridge for humanitarian and medical aid, transporting 75 tons via seven aircraft. He noted that Iraq has facilitated the entry of displaced Lebanese individuals using identity cards instead of travel documents, demonstrating its solidarity with the Lebanese people. He called for de-escalation and a commitment to peace, urging international cooperation to contain the conflict. Hussein emphasized the need for implementing Security Council resolutions to halt the war, protect UNIFIL forces, and ensure their safety, expressing hope that the conference would lead to concrete actions to end aggression in Lebanon and support the safe return of displaced persons.
