Baghdad: Mahmoud Dawood Salman Musa Al-Mashhadani, an influential Iraqi politician, has been re-elected today as the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, a position he first held from 2006 to 2009. Al-Mashhadani, born in Baghdad in 1948, was previously the first Speaker after the American invasion. He is also noted for his role as the Speaker of the Arab Parliamentary Union in 2008.

According to National Iraqi News Agency, Al-Mashhadani completed his education in Baghdad, graduating from the College of Medicine in 1972 as a First Lieutenant Doctor. He served as a doctor in the Iraqi army before venturing into politics. Al-Mashhadani’s political journey began in 2003, contributing significantly to Iraq’s political landscape post-regime change.

In 2004, Al-Mashhadani played a pivotal role in founding the National Dialogue Council and was a member of the Constitution Drafting Committee. He led as the head of the political bureau of the Call and Guidance Organization. His first tenure as Speaker of the House of Rep
resentatives began in March 2006 and lasted until December 2008. His leadership extended beyond Iraq when he was elected as the President of the Arab Parliamentary Union in 2008.

Al-Mashhadani’s re-election today marks another significant chapter in his career, reinforcing his longstanding influence in Iraqi and regional politics.
