New York: The US Department of Justice announced that an Iranian has been charged with receiving an order from Tehran to prepare a plan to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump. A statement by the Ministry said: "This plan was directly planned by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard in retaliation for the assassination of the commander of Al-Quds Force in the Revolutionary Guard, Qassem Soleimani, in a US strike near Baghdad airport in 2020." According to National Iraqi News Agency, a criminal indictment filed in a federal court in Manhattan stated that an unnamed official in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard instructed an agent of his last September to develop a plan to monitor Trump and ultimately assassinate him. The criminal indictment further details that the official had informed the agent, identified as Farhad Shakeri, that if he could not develop a plan by then, Iran would hold off on its plan until after the presidential election. This decision was based on the belief that Trump would lose the election, making it easier to carry out the assassination. The indictment also reveals that Shakeri communicated to the FBI that he did not intend to develop a plan to assassinate Trump within the seven days the Iranian official requested.
